Established in 2018, Czech School Scotland CIC continues and builds on a long history of invaluable work initially provided by the Edinburgh based charity The Scottish Czech and Slovak Fund. Our goal has always been to create a community where we could build bridges between the Scottish and Czech cultures.
We provide Czech classes for bilingual Czech children and we also teach Czech as a second language.
We offer English as a second language classes to Czechs and Slovaks. Every year we organize traditional cultural events such as St Nicholas party and Ceilidh.
Classes are held on Saturday afternoons fortnightly. Our baby and parent group for children aged 0-3.5 years and the kindergarten for children aged 3.5-6 years take place in St Stephen’s Church in Comely bank. The aim is for babies and young children to hear and speak Czech, expand vocabulary through singing, playing and crafting and to learn about Czech culture and traditions.
Currently we have two classes of school aged children, a younger group aged 6-7 and older group 7-11. We also have a school class for Slovak children of mixed ages.
Our school lessons are held in Broughton High School. We provide education based on the Czech curriculum, i.e. we teach reading and writing in the Czech language and the Czech grammar. Our children also learn about parts of Czech history and geography related to our country.
